Dental Technology of the Future is Here Today: Here Are Some Examples to Prove It

Three Best Rated® sits down with three award-winning dentists to discuss futuristic technologies that are being used today

In this day and age, technology is moving at lightning speeds. Tech that was once only found in science fiction is now here today. This is true for almost everything, including the dentist's office! Dentists are constantly looking for safer, more efficient technology and methods to solve dental problems. Three Best Rated® had the unique opportunity to interview three award-winning dentists to discuss the technology they are implementing in their practices.

Clear Aligners

Clear Aligners, such as Invisalign or Clear Correct, is a minimally invasive orthodontic therapy to correct much of the same things as braces. “95% of cases that can be treated with braces can be successfully treated with clear aligners,” says Dr. Marika Dekanoidze of Lemalâ Dental Group. Getting fitted for an aligner is a surprisingly easy process. “In a very smooth and comfortable technique,” says Dr. Danial Deheshi of Solo Dental, “we are now able to digitally scan your teeth... no more 5-minute gooey impressions and gagging!” The dentist is then able to plan treatments using the digital scan of the teeth.”The main advantages of clear aligners include: an inconspicuous appearance...improved state of oral hygiene – you can brush and floss without any mechanical obstruction,” says Dr. Dekanoidze. “Patients will [also] experience more comfort and gentleness while effective force is applied.” The main advantage that patients will notice is appearance. “It's very hard to tell if someone is wearing these clear [aligners] at all,” Dr. Raju Sarna of Hawthorne Village Dental says.

3D Imaging Cone Beam CT Scan

With the use of a 3D imaging cone beam CT scan, any dentist is able to plan treatments out to a degree that was not possible before. As the name suggests, the dentist will use the Cone Beam CT to scan the patient's teeth to create a 3D model of them. “Results can be created retrospectively from the final crown back to the implant, therefore eliminating all margins of error,” Dr. Deheshi says. The scans are useful in detecting future problems allowing the dentist to address them, all before they implement the procedure with the patient.

Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF)

As consumers become more conscientious of what they put in their body, more natural alternative products have been on the rise. The dental industry is no exception! Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is harvested from the patients own blood to help with healing and regenerative capabilities. “The fibrin matrix is enriched with platelets, which contains many growth factors and cytokines,” says Dr. Sarna. This means a natural way to help boost start a patient's healing capabilities! "The use of PRF... allow us to not only avoid unnecessary produces and medications, but can expedite the healing in a controlled manner with reduced pain,” says Dr. Deheshi, “This is truly changing the field of medicine and I am proud to be at its forefront.” PRF can be integrated in many different procedures including surgeries and implants.

Laser Dentistry

Before lasers only existed as a pipe dream, but now they are everywhere – including the dentist's office. A laser is a great alternative to traditional dentistry, especially for children as it does not involve anesthesia or injections, and is painless. “The laser sterilizes the surgical area, meaning that there is less chance of bacterial invasions, and infections,” says Dr. Sarna. A laser can be used in many procedures such as cavity preparation and it's gentle enough to be used in various soft tissue procedures. “It is one of the least invasive, most effective tools that dentist have at their disposal,” Dr. Sarna says.
